๐ From Delivery to Daily Operation: One Year of a Chinese Medical Cyclotron Running in Africa
2026-06-01
๐ข On December 29, 2023, LBTโs LB-11MTS was officially shipped to Kenya.
๐๏ธ On February 28, 2024, the cyclotron successfully completed onsite installation. one of the first Chinese-made medical cyclotron installations in Africa.
But for a nuclear medicine project, installation is only the beginning.
๐ In June 2025, the project officially entered clinical operation.
Today, the system has been running stably for nearly one year.
๐ฅ The center currently serves approximately 20โ40 patients per day, mainly supporting 18F-FDG PET imaging. One FDG production batch is performed daily, and the hospital operates with 8 patient waiting rooms as part of its nuclear medicine workflow.
๐จ๐ง During this past year, LBT engineers have remained onsite for extended periods, working alongside the cyclotron and the local team every day.
From cyclotron operation, isotope production, radiochemistry synthesis, and quality control, to equipment maintenance, consumable replacement, troubleshooting, and workflow management, the engineering team has continuously supported the daily operation of the center while helping build local operational capability.
๐ For overseas nuclear medicine projects, the biggest challenge is often not equipment delivery itself, but how to establish a sustainable local operation system.
๐ For this reason, LBT provided not only the cyclotron system, but also comprehensive onsite training covering:
Cyclotron operation and maintenance
Radiopharmaceutical production workflow
Synthesis module operation
Quality control procedures
Daily inspection and consumable replacement
ect.
Supporting system operation and management
โ
After one year of operation, the local team has gradually developed the ability to independently manage routine production and basic maintenance tasks.
๐ง At the same time, to improve long-term service responsiveness, LBT established a local spare parts inventory at the customer site, with regular replenishment and inventory management support.
๐ฆ As of today, the onsite spare parts stock can fully support more than six months of routine maintenance, allowing most common service issues to be resolved locally without waiting for international shipment.
๐ From overseas shipment in 2023, to onsite installation in 2024, and now to more than one year of stable operation, this LB-11MTS project reflects a complete overseas nuclear medicine capability-building process.
๐ค From equipment delivery to long-term operation.
๐ฌ From engineering installation to localized support.
๐ From โMade in Chinaโ to โServed by China.โ
Through projects like this, LBT continues exploring the global path of Chinese nuclear medicine equipment and service
