From Radionuclide Production to Radiopharmaceutical: What Does QC Verify?

2026-07-16
Producing ¹⁸F is only the first step. Before ¹⁸F-FDG can be released for clinical use, it must pass a comprehensive quality control (QC) process that verifies the product is accurate, pure, and safe.
⚛️ 1. Radionuclidic Identity
QC first confirms that the produced radionuclide is truly ¹⁸F by verifying:
✅ Half-life
✅ Gamma energy spectrum
✅ Absence of unwanted radionuclide impurities
This ensures the correct radionuclide has been produced.
🎯 2. Radiochemical Quality
Producing ¹⁸F does not automatically produce ¹⁸F-FDG. After synthesis, QC evaluates whether the radionuclide has been correctly incorporated into the target molecule by checking:
🔹 Labeling efficiency
🔹 Radiochemical purity
🔹 Free ¹⁸F and radioactive by-products
These tests confirm the product is the intended radiopharmaceutical.
💉 3. Pharmaceutical Safety
As an injectable drug, ¹⁸F-FDG must also meet pharmaceutical quality requirements, including:
🔹 pH
🔹 Residual solvents
🔹 Chemical impurities
🔹 Endotoxin
🔹 Sterility
Only after these tests can the product be released for patient use.
🔬 QC Requires More Than One Test
A complete radiopharmaceutical QC laboratory typically includes capabilities for:
Radioactivity measurement
Radiochemical analysis
Chemical analysis
Microbiological testing
Although detailed requirements differ among the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP), European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), and United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the core QC principles remain highly consistent.
📈 Reliable Production Depends on Reliable QC
The real challenge for a radiopharmaceutical facility is not simply producing isotopes, but producing safe, compliant, and clinically usable radiopharmaceuticals—consistently.
As nuclear medicine expands beyond ¹⁸F-FDG to isotopes such as Ga-68, Cu-64, Zr-89, and therapeutic radionuclides, robust QC becomes increasingly important.
At LBT, we provide complete radiopharmaceutical production solutions—from cyclotron systems and target technologies to radiochemistry workflows and quality control equipment—helping customers build reliable and compliant isotope production platforms.
Because producing isotopes is only the beginning. Quality control is what turns them into medicines.
